Rosana Cade

Venue: Sitelines (Directions)

Sat 2 Jul to Sun 3 Jul

Advisory age: 16+

Walking:Holding is a subtle, experiential walk through your city in the hands of strangers. The piece asks people to challenge prejudices in the flesh, and experience what it is to walk in someone elseʼs shoes - or hands.

A woman with a shaved head takes your hand.
A six-foot drag queen walks you past a church.
A hooded youth puts his arm round you as you sit together on a bench.
A white haired woman hugs you good-bye as you leave.

Walking:Holding is an original performance created by Rosana Cade. The performance involves one audience member at a time being taken on a walk around Reading, whilst holding hands with a series of different people, of different ages, sexes, and appearances from the local area. It is a unique and, at times, challenging experience investigating preconceptions, spontaneous personal connections, and the public’s reactions to displays of different sexualities.

Walking: Holding has taken place in many cities including; London (at the National Theatre), Glasgow, Brighton, Birmingham, Sheffield, Ipswich, Cork, Dublin, Hong Kong, Lisbon, Copenhagen, Zurich and Amsterdam.

Location: Meet at South Street Arts Centre.

Ticket information

  • “Everyone acknowledged the astute provocation in Cade’s seemingly simple concept, with its flesh and blood challenge to prejudices and its honouring of individuals and their differences.”

    The Herald
  • “Cade’s gorgeous embrace of a piece forms a meditation on intimacy and difference…What eventually emerges from the experience, on a personal level, is a spirit of quiet defiance, of refusal to be deterred by others’ looks or opinions.”
