South StreetDevon Sproule Ensemble + Thomas GillWednesday 3 October, doors 8pm After spending the last six months in Germany and England, Devon Sproule has settled once again in the American south, in Austin, Texas. The city is renowned for its music and also, its brutal summers. Many Austin musicians make a point to tour north during the summer months and Sproule is no exception. Just done with a cross-country tour of Canada, Sproule is making her way to the UK with a new addition to her band, Toronto guitar / synth virtuoso Thom Gill. Gill, a jazz grad turned pop prince, has been on tour with Sproule for most of the summer, accompanying her and opening the shows with his brand of gospel-inspired soul. The two together deliver a weird and inspiring take on folk-pop, playing a mix of new material and songs from Sproule's Tin Angel release I Love You, Go Easy. "The lyrics of I Love You, Go Easy glance off each other arrestingly, juxtaposing images. The music is correspondingly complex...layered textures and unexpected lyrical piano codas somewhere between jazz and hymnal, have a centripetal stillness about them, as if suspended for a moment out of time."
