Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Tuesday 18 March, 7.30pm
Internationally renowned Danish maestro Thomas Dausgaard takes the helm for this thought-provoking concert of music from the Romantic masters. Brahmsí Tragic Overture, with its passionate and turbulent themes introduces Rachmaninovís majestic Third Piano Concerto, performed by acclaimed English virtuoso John Lill, who this year celebrates his seventieth birthday. Written at the pinnacle of the grand Russian tradition with its sumptuous melodies and fast-paced fingerwork, the Concerto is a brilliant introspection of this troubled composerís mind. Completing the programme is DvořŠkís Eighth Symphony with its sultry and brooding first movement and its glittering, spirit-lifting finale.
Pre-concert talk 6.15pm presented by Peter Avis
