Casual House Attendant

Directorate of Environment and Neighbourhood Services
The Hexagon, Reading • Arts & Theatres

RG2 (SCP 11) £8.82 per hour
Ref: CUL0227

Casual work including weekends and evenings.

As part of Reading Arts and Venues, The Hexagon Theatre is looking to recruit new members of casual staff in preparation for its busy season of events starting in September. The search is on for Casual House Attendants to compliment the current Front of House team that takes pride in looking after the safety and enjoyment of the thousands of theatre patrons who visit each year as well as the theatre itself.

Shifts can be on any day of the week, to include weekends and bank holidays.

Stage Door: usually from 8am until 4pm, or 4pm until midnight

Events: mainly evenings (usually from 4pm or 6pm onwards) and weekends, with occasional day shifts for matinees.

Rotas are prepared four weeks in advance around the requirements of theatre events and the availability of casual employees.

The House Attendant’s role has two functions:

Stage Door
Granting access to the building and providing assistance to visiting theatre companies and staff, maintaining theatre facilities and carrying out routine maintenance to theatre seating and Front of House equipment.

Acting as the first point of contact for customers on arrival at the theatre, maintaining a low key security presence, providing a source of information regarding performances and facilities, selling programmes and merchandise, managing queues for artist signings, assisting customers with access needs and changing theatre layouts and displays to suit the upcoming events, as well as locking up the building at the end of the day.

House Attendants must always ensure the safety of the theatre audiences and be ready to evacuate where necessary. They also assist Ushers in monitoring customers’ behaviour during an event to prevent and deter disruption and dangerous occurrences. The position would suit anyone who enjoys a social role, is confident yet sympathetic in dealing with difficult situations, and is passionate about delivering outstanding customer service with a smile. Theatre staff must have the ability to work well under pressure as well as a pro-active and outgoing manner.

Previous experience in a similar role is preferred but not essential as full training will be provided.
