Why join the Youth Theatre

South Street Youth Theatre offers young people the opportunity to develop drama skills in a relaxed and fun environment. Led by experienced, professional tutors the groups will work towards performances which are then staged at South Street's professionally run main theatre space.

The emphasis is on the imagination and creativity of the young people, so all their performances are devised, written and performed by them in collaboration with the directors. As well as performing at South Street, in recent years the young people have taken a show to the Edinburgh Fringe, created a show for a bus and a "promenade" performance through South Street.

Don't just take our word for it

“The integration of ages, backgrounds and ability levels is an inspiration”

Seniors Parent

"South Street provide the young people a safe space …The classes encourage self-expression as well as nourishing their imagination.  By working collaboratively, the young people are not simply putting on a performance.  They are also learning and developing hugely important life skills.”

Youth Theatre FAQs

Can my child try a session before signing up for a season?

Yes, we can offer one-off taster sessions for £6. We find it’s easier for the child if they try out at the beginning of the season before the rehearsals for the show begin and they can get a feel for how the sessions work. We do have waiting lists for some of the groups so any participation is subject to a place being available.

Will I get a chance to see my child perform?

Yes, at the end of each season the groups perform the piece that they have devised in front of an audience of friends, family, carers and, for the Seniors groups, paid members of the public. These performances are held in the professionally run main theatre space at South Street with a technician providing sound and lighting.

How do the sessions work?

Each ‘season’ the children and young people spend time exploring ideas and themes around a variety of issues. They spend time developing these ideas into a performance piece which is staged in front of an audience. The groups are very much led by the young people using themes that are important or interesting to them and these discussions go on to inform the final performance pieces.

Does my child have to attend every session?

We understand that young people and families have very busy lives and committing to a weekly session can be difficult. However, as with all things, we do encourage them to attend as many sessions as possible to achieve the maximum benefit from the groups. This is particularly important during the run up to the performances at the end of each season. If they are going to be away for a week it’s helpful if you can let us know in advance.

Can I split the payments?

We can arrange for the payments for sessions to be split into two, please contact Jane Ibbotson to discuss this further.

Can my child join mid-season?

We generally advise new starters to join as early in the season as possible, this will give them greater depth to the understanding of the final show and allow them to fully engage with the rest of the group. We don’t recommend joining after the first half term (October for the September – February season, and February for the February – July season) however please do contact us if you have any queries regarding joining the group.

Do I (parent or carer) need to stay in the building for the class?

For the Juniors classes you are welcome to wait in the bar area during the sessions, however if you have completed the mandatory emergency contact form we are happy for you to leave – but please do collect your child promptly.

Do I need to complete a form?

Yes, if you are new to the group you will have to complete and return a membership form with contact details. This information is kept in full accordance with GDPR regulations.

Will my child need to audition?

No. We welcome all children of all ability, interest and background as we believe that each individual has a valuable contribution to make to the group.
