Meet Point: Thames River Cruise Boarding Pier

In A Wonderland They Lie - A Riverboat Salon

Venue: Thames River Cruise (Directions)

Fri 27 Sep, 18:30

In A Wonderland They Lie is a floating literary and musical salon, a riverboat tour showcasing writers and musicians whose work is haunted by a certain spirit of place: that strange, enchanted and often unnerving collision between the pastoral and the Ballardian that seems peculiarly English, an atmosphere that is particularly pronounced along this stretch of the Thames Valley.

Partnering with Thames Cruisers, this event will take place on board one of the beautiful Thames Cruisers to sail along the quiet middle reaches of the Thames allowing audiences to see Berkshire from the water.

This intimate event is curated by the writer, broadcaster and film-maker Michael Smith. Michael has written several novels for Faber & Faber (Giro Playboy, Unreal City), written and presented various documentaries for for BBC 4 (Citizen Smith, Drivetime), held a regular slot on BBC 2’s Culture Show, and recorded an album with Andrew Weatherall, among other things. He’s performed extensively, from the Royal Festival Hall to Glastonbury to the Colony Room, and has been a reguar performer at Caught By The River’s stages at the UK’s best festivals.

Getting to Thames Crusiers Boarding Pier:
If you are driving, there is a public car park just behind the Reading Rowing Club. It is a pay and display car park which on some days is free of charge.
It is much better however to take public transport, as we are much closer to Reading station than people imagine.
Exit the train station on the side away from the town itself and cross over the main road at the crossing lights (signed toward Caversham and the river). You then take a short path down the side of an office building before joining a path along the river. Turn left walking towards the new bridge and continue to follow the path until passing under Caversham Bridge and Caversham Pier is in front of you. This walk takes us no longer than 15 minutes and once out of the station is flat and easy.
By bus we are close to routes 18.22.24 and 27 (these may vary). You can exit the bus in either direction just before or after Caversham Bridge or in Richfield Avenue near the leisure centre.
